Editorial policy

What we will and won't publish, where our facts come from, and how we handle being wrong.

Independence

Pin & Putt earns affiliate commission — see the affiliate disclosure — and that revenue is separated from editorial decisions by structure rather than by assurance.

No advertiser, retailer or manufacturer has any input into what appears here. Nobody can buy a position on a list. We accept no free products, no sponsored posts and no display advertising, so there is no relationship to manage in the first place.

Sourcing standards

We generate no first-hand test data, which means sourcing carries the entire evidentiary load. The rules are strict because they have to be:

  • Specifications come from the manufacturer's published material — spec sheets, manuals, product pages — and are cited on the page.
  • Specs are attributed, not asserted. We write "Titleist publishes a compression of X", not "it has a compression of X". The distinction matters: we're reporting a manufacturer's claim, not confirming it.
  • Rules of golf claims go to the USGA.Never to another publisher's summary of the rules.
  • Prices come from the live price layer only. No price is ever typed into copy.
  • Ratings and review counts are live data or absent. We do not paraphrase, estimate or recall them.
  • Subjective judgments are marked as such and reasoned from a cited spec — never presented as a measurement.
  • If it can't be sourced, it isn't published."Generally considered" and "many golfers find" are not substitutes for a citation.
  • We never cite a competitor's roundup as evidence for a specification. We go to the manufacturer.

What we never claim

These are absolute, and they hold on every page:

  • That we tested anything. No "we tested", no "in our testing", no "we've put rounds on these", in any wording. We don't have a lab and we won't imply one. See how we pick.
  • Credentials nobody here holds. No expert panel, no certified fitters, no PGA professionals, no years of industry experience.
  • Fabricated prices, ratings or review counts. Live data or nothing.
  • Testimonials or customer quotes. This site is new and has none. Inventing them would be the fastest way to deserve no trust at all.
  • Urgency or scarcity. We hold no inventory and there is no deadline.

The disqualifier requirement

Every product recommended on this site carries a stated reason it might be wrong for your golfer. This is enforced in the content system rather than by editorial habit — the field is required, so a product cannot be published without one.

It exists because it's the single most useful thing we can offer a reader who doesn't play golf, and because a retailer-owned publisher structurally cannot print it about something they stock.

Corrections

We will get things wrong. When we do, we fix the page and say so.

  • Factual errors are corrected as soon as we can verify the correct information, and the page's last-updated date changes.
  • Substantive corrections— a wrong specification, a mis-stated rule, a product recommended that shouldn't have been — are noted on the page itself rather than quietly edited away.
  • Discontinued or unavailable products are replaced, and the copy around them updated rather than left describing something that no longer exists.
  • Price errors self-correct. Prices are machine-fetched, so a stale price disappears automatically rather than needing a human to notice.

To report an error, email info@pinandputt.com or use the contact form. Corrections from readers are genuinely welcome — a wrong specification on a page is worse for us than for you.

How often we re-check pages

  • Prices — checked continuously and automatically.
  • Discontinued or out-of-stock picks — replaced on detection.
  • Gear roundups — reviewed quarterly, picks and specifications re-verified.
  • Seasonal pages — reviewed annually, roughly eight weeks before the season.
  • Guides — reviewed every six months.
  • Specification citations — re-verified annually or when a model refreshes.
  • Compliance sweep — quarterly: no testing claims, no invented credentials, no stale prices, disclosure present above every first affiliate link.

Titles and dates

We don't put a year in page titles. Competitors do — "best golf gifts 2026" — which guarantees the page looks stale the moment the year turns and creates an annual maintenance job that mostly doesn't get done.

A visible "prices checked today" is a stronger freshness signal than a year stamp, and it has the advantage of being continuously true rather than true once a year.

Authorship

Pages are written by Stephen V.and bylined accordingly. Where a page carries a byline, the same person is named in the page's structured data — we don't show a human byline while telling search engines an organization wrote it. More on the about page.
