Best golf shoes

Genuinely good shoes exist at every price. This is also the riskiest gift category on the site, and we'd rather say so up front.

How we pick

The short answer

The short answer

Only buy golf shoes if you can verify the size and width from a pair they already own — five hours on uneven ground makes a half-size error a real problem, not a minor one. If you can check: spikeless suits most golfers and can be worn off the course; spiked grips better in the wet.

The picks

Every pick, and who it's wrong for

Skechers Skechers Go Golf Vortex Rival

01All-day comfort

Skechers Go Golf Vortex Rival

The comfort pick, and the one an older golfer will thank you for.

What it is
A spikeless golf shoe built on Skechers' cushioned walking-shoe platform rather than a traditional golf last.
Why a golfer wants it
Eighteen holes is around five miles on foot. Skechers' whole business is cushioning, and for a golfer whose feet or knees complain by the back nine that matters more than tour credibility.
  • Skechers publishes: spikeless
  • Cushioned midsole
  • Waterproof line

They care how their shoes look on a golf course. This is a comfort shoe first, and a golfer with strong opinions about kit may not want it.

Puma Puma Ignite Elevate 2

02Best value golf shoe

Puma Ignite Elevate 2

The most shoe for double figures, from a brand people actually wear.

What it is
A spikeless golf shoe on Puma's cushioned foam platform, waterproof per Puma's spec.
Why a golfer wants it
Golf shoes get expensive fast. This clears the bar for waterproofing and grip at roughly half what the flagship models cost.
  • Puma publishes: spikeless
  • Waterproof upper
  • Foam midsole

adidas adidas Tour360 24

03Grip in the wet

adidas Tour360 24

A proper spiked shoe for a golfer who plays in real weather.

What it is
A spiked golf shoe with replaceable cleats in the sole, plus adidas's waterproof construction.
Why a golfer wants it
Spikes still grip better than spikeless on wet grass and slopes, and a golfer who plays year-round rather than in summer only will feel the difference.
  • adidas publishes: spiked
  • Waterproof upper
  • Replaceable cleats

They mostly play in dry summer conditions and like walking to the clubhouse in their shoes. Spiked soles are less pleasant off grass, and some clubhouses ask you to change.

adidas adidas Codechaos 25

04Style-conscious golfers

adidas Codechaos 25

The shoe a younger golfer would actually choose off a shelf.

What it is
adidas's spikeless golf shoe, built on a chunkier sole and sold in far louder colorways than the category norm.
Why a golfer wants it
Golf shoes are traditionally conservative. This line isn't, which is precisely why it appeals to golfers under about forty.
  • adidas publishes: spikeless
  • Boost-lineage midsole
  • Waterproof line

They're a traditionalist. Some clubs still have dress expectations, and a golfer who wears a white leather shoe by choice will not want these.

FootJoy FootJoy Pro/SL

05The golfer who knows what they want

FootJoy Pro/SL

The most-worn shoe in professional golf. Also the riskiest gift on this page.

What it is
A spikeless golf shoe — grip comes from a molded sole rather than removable metal or plastic spikes, so it can be worn off the course.
Why a golfer wants it
FootJoy is the dominant shoe brand in golf and the Pro/SL is its best-known model. A golfer who wears them knows exactly what they are.
  • FootJoy publishes: spikeless
  • Waterproof warranty
  • Multiple width options

You are not certain of the size AND the width. Golf shoes are worn for five hours on uneven ground; half a size out is not a minor problem. Unless you can check the size in their closet, buy something else and put a note in the card offering to go shopping.

ECCO ECCO Biom C5 Gore-Tex

06The golfer who has everything

ECCO Biom C5 Gore-Tex

The most comfortable shoe here, at a price that reflects it.

What it is
A premium leather golf shoe with a Gore-Tex waterproof membrane. ECCO tans its own leather, which is unusual for a shoe brand.
Why a golfer wants it
ECCO's reputation among golfers who walk is close to unanimous, and Gore-Tex is the waterproofing standard rather than a proprietary claim. For a golfer who already owns everything, this is the upgrade they haven't justified to themselves.
  • ECCO publishes: Gore-Tex membrane
  • Full-grain leather
  • BOA or lace closure

What to know

Before you buy

The sizing warning, in full

We'd rather lose the sale than have you buy the wrong thing, so: golf shoes are the highest-risk gift category we cover, and it isn't close.

A golfer walks around five miles in them, on grass that's uneven and often wet, while making a movement that puts real lateral force through the foot. They need a length and a width, and sizing conventions differ meaningfully between brands.

If you can read the size off a pair in their closet, go ahead. If you're estimating from their normal shoe size, don't — buy something from under $100 instead and put a note in the card offering to go shopping together. That reads as thoughtful rather than as a cop-out.

Spiked or spikeless?

Spikedshoes have removable plastic cleats screwed into the sole. They grip better on wet grass and on slopes, and they're what you want for year-round play in real weather. The cleats wear out and get replaced, which is a small ongoing task.

Spikelessshoes get grip from a molded rubber sole with lots of small lugs. Less outright grip in the wet, but they can be worn straight from the car to the course and out afterwards, and they're more comfortable to walk in off grass.

Most golfers now choose spikeless, and for a gift it's the safer pick — it's more versatile and there are no cleats to maintain. The exception is somebody who plays through winter. Full comparison: spiked vs spikeless golf shoes.

Waterproofing is the spec that matters

Golf is played early in the morning on wet grass. Wet feet on the third hole makes the next three hours miserable.

Most golf shoes above about $90 are waterproof and many carry a published warranty on it for one to two years. Gore-Tex is the recognized third-party standard; brands also have their own proprietary membranes, which generally work but aren't independently certified in the same way.

Why comfort beats performance here

The performance differences between good golf shoes are small. The comfort differences are not, and comfort is what a golfer notices on the fifteenth hole.

That's why our top pick here is a comfort-first shoe rather than the tour-worn one. For an older golfer especially, cushioning matters more than what the professionals wear — and it's a genuinely thoughtful gift for somebody whose feet or knees complain by the back nine.

Do they even need special shoes?

For a casual golfer playing a few times a summer in dry weather — honestly, not really. A pair of trainers with reasonable grip will do. Golf shoes become worth it once someone plays regularly or in the wet, at which point the grip and waterproofing both start to matter. We answered this properly in do you need special shoes for golf.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Should I buy golf shoes as a gift?

Only if you can verify size andwidth from a pair they own. Five hours on uneven ground needs a precise fit, and sizing differs between brands. If you can't check, pick something else.

Are spikeless golf shoes as good as spiked?

For most golfers in most conditions yes, plus they're wearable off the course. Spikes still grip better on wet grass and slopes. Full comparison.

Do golf shoes need to be waterproof?

It matters more than most specs — golf is played early on wet grass. Most shoes above ~$90 are waterproof, often with a published warranty. Gore-Tex is the recognized third-party standard.

How much do good golf shoes cost?

$70–100 gets a genuinely good waterproof spikeless shoe. $120–190 is tour-model territory. Above $250 you're paying for leather and comfort, not performance.
